Eva Jewel Brown

Eva Jewel Brown, 93 of Spiro went to her eternal home in Heaven on Oct. 24, 2012. She was born Sept. 28, 1919, to David Vernal and Julia Lee “Dollie” Newburn Argo. She lived her childhood years in Hoyt, where she fell in love with Lilliard Brown. They were married in 1942 and had two daughters, Brenda and Julia.Eva Jewel was a 1938 graduate of Stigler High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1946, Master’s of teaching in 1964 and special educatIon certificate in 1977, all from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Eva Jewel taught school at several places, mostly in Oklahoma, including Hoyt, Mudlark (north of Stigler), Whoody (southwest of Stigler), Spiro (from 1946 to 1968, mostly third grade), Pinole, Calif., and Tulsa, and retired as a special education teacher at Pocola Schools in 1981. From 1977 to 1997, Eva Jewel and Lilliard helped establish and were co-owners in two orchards in Spiro. She has always been a Baptist with a closeness and dedication to God. She taught Sunday School for many years. She often talked about going to Heaven. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend. For the family, she always had lots of hugs, “I love you” and “I’ll be waiting for you up there.” She was very grateful for her loving and Christian family. She enjoyed working In her yard, traveling, scrapbooking, cooking and family gatherings. Eva Jewel was preceded in death by her husband, Lilliard Billy Brown, after 58 years of marriage; her parents, step-dad, Dewey Wood; sisters, Lorraine Argo at age 5, Charlene Totty, Naomi Warren, Geneva Neely; step-sister, Hazel Jane Cleveland; and her son-in-law, George Shaw. Eva Jewel is survived by two daughters, Brenda Shaw of Spiro, and Julia and her husband, Mack Avery, of Weatherford, Texas; and one sister, Dormilee Mullings of Broken Arrow. She is survived by five grandsons, Dr. Mike and Marla Shaw of Sapulpa, Steve and Kim Shaw of Spiro, Mack and Jennifer Avery of Anchorage, Alaska, Brian and Tammy Avery of Weatherford, Texas, and Jason Avery of Austln, Texas.She is survived by 11 great grandchildren, Emily and Evan Shaw of Sapulpa, Matthew, Megan, and Morgan Shaw of Spiro, Mack and John Avery of Anchorage, Julia, Kyllie, Brian, and Katie Avery of Weatherford, Texas.Her special caretaker was Glenda Perez.Pallbearers will be Steve Shaw, Mack Avery, Mack Avery II, Brian Avery, Jason Avery, Jady Riggs and Leroy Skinner.Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro with Dr. Mike Shaw and Brian Avery officiating.
