Genelle Clingenpeel Harlan

Genelle Clingenpeel Harlan, 92, of Spiro died Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Fort Smith, Ark.She was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Stillwater to Stanley John and Edna Mae (Ditto) Clingenpeel. She married Parks Eugene Harlan on June 8, 1941, in Muskogee. They were married for more than 43 years when he went to heaven in 1984. Mrs. Harlan resided in Spiro since 1948 and was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Spiro some 63 years, where she held many offices and was active in the United Methodist Women. She assisted at Harlan Insurance/Reality for many years, taught at the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee, Poteau and Spiro and was postmistress there. She loved to read and was a frequent visitor to the local library. She enjoyed all board and card games and played in bridge clubs for many years. She visited at the Spiro Nursing Home as often as she could.She is survived by one daughter, Peggy Talley of Poteau; one son, Kenny Harlan of Spiro; three sisters, Delmoine Shepherd of Enid, Necia Elliott of Tulsa, Micki Weeks of Grove; three grandchildren,Troy Talley and wife, Shari, of Edmond, Trisha Pickle of Poteau, and TraeAnne Brisendine and husband, Travis, of Fort Smith; and seven great-grandchildren who will miss their GG.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Parks L. Harlan; and brothers-in-law, David Shepherd, Vincent Elliott, Jim Weeks, Dan and Ross Harlan.Services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, at United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kim Hutson and Mark McAdow officiating. Burial will be in Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of the Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Spiro.Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.Pallbearers will be Mark Cox, Galen Sullins, Ronald Shepard, John Redwine, Don Atkinson and Dennis Peterson.Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Hunter, Jim Harlan West, Jim Cavens and Jim Whitehead.The family requests that donations be made to a memorial fund in her name at the First United Methodist Church in Spiro, the Spiro Library Building Fund or the Spiro Foundation for Excellence in Education.An online guest book is available at
