A new year is coming

The new school year is upon us, and the year looks good for LeFlore County. First of all, let me tell you about the best high school band in this part of the state. After having another stellar year with its “Tribute to the Fallen,” the Poteau High School band, under the direction of Harley Thomas, Becky Seale and Joey Marsh, has been installing its new program, “The Pirates of the Caribbean.” I can't wait until the first home game to see and hear the band, but I also hear the band parents will be selling ice cream dipping dots in the consession stand. I have always wanted to try that.• • •I am eagerly awaiting this year's third and fourth grade football teams. This will be the second year that I have coached my grandson, James. I have a grandson, Brendon, who will be in the first grade and grandson Ryan, who will be age 1 in October. Plus, I am going to have another grandson or granddaughter in February. So, if I can, I could be coaching for another 10 years. On Aug. 23, there is going to be a revival of sorts. The Poteau Pirates will entertain the Heavener Wolves in a football scrimmage. Most of the people will get lost in the fact that this is only a controlled scrimmage. Both squads would like to get as many players into the fray as possible.Since this is the year that new football schedules are being set and formed for 2014-15, I would like to make one final pitch for the renewal of the Poteau vs. Spiro series. Schedule it for a Saturday night. and you'll have standing room only. Spiro has scheduled Muldrow another member of Class 4-A.Here is my preseason football poll for LeFlore County:1. Poteau, 2. Spiro, 3. Talihina, 4. Heavener, 5. Pocola, 6. Panama, 7. Arkoma, 8. Bokoshe.
