Pocola Indians football team looks to return to winning ways tonight against Hugo

The Pocola Indians are anxious to get back in the win column after facing two very good teams — the Quinton Savages (who beat them 30-14 in their home opener two weeks ago) and the second-ranked Vian Wolverines (who defeated them 68-0 in last week's District 2A-6 opener).Rick Lang, Pocola's coach, said even in the preseason that Vian was going to be the team to beat in the district. After last week's game, he's even more sure of that.“They're going to do that to everybody they play against,” Lang said. “They're so far ahead of where we are. We were just outclassed. I think they'll win it all. I think they're that good.”The good news is now that Vian is out of the way, Lang believes that his Indians (2-2, 0-1 in district play) can start looking at bigger and better things.“I was glad to get them over with early,” he said. “That was one bright spot. Another is we're healthy. We managed to stay healthy. I got a good bunch of kids who love to play, and they can't wait to get out there (tonight) and prove to everyone that they can play. Our kids have had good practices this week, some of the best we've had.”That will begin with tonight's District 2A-6 road game against the Hugo Buffaloes at 7:30 p.m.“I think the race for second place starts right now (tonight),” Lang said. “I could go to anyone that's left after Vian. There's some pretty big games out there, like ours and Panama at Hartshorne. I think the race starts (tonight) for second place. I think whoever isn't playing Vian has a key game for second place. This is our shot, we believe, at No. 2 (in District 2A-6). If we want to go second in our district, and we do, we have to win. If we lose, we have to rely on help, and that doesn't ordinarily happen for us.”— — —District 2A-6 StandingsTeam District Overall +/-Hartshorne 1-0 2-2 +15Vian 1-0 4-0 15Wilburton 1-0 2-2 +12Hugo 0-0 2-2 0Panama 0-1 0-4 -12Pocola 0-1 2-2 -15Antlers 0-1 0-4 -15— — —To Get There — Take Oklahoma State Highway 112 south to Poteau.
