A Poteau city councilman was arrested over the weekend on alleged possession of drugs, authorities said.

Panama Police Chief John Whiteaker reported that Poteau City Councilman David White was arrested by Panama Police Department on Saturday [Aug. 12, 2017] at approximately 1 a.m. on charges of possession of a controlled and dangerous substance — methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting a loaded firearm.

According to Whiteaker, White was originally pulled over for driving on the shoulder. Officers were then advised that White had an outstanding warrant in another city which led to White being taken into custody and his vehicle searched.

According to Whiteaker, officers allegedly found a glass pipe in the vehicle which field tested positive for methamphetamine. Whiteaker added that White was also carrying a loaded firearm for which he told officers he had a concealed carry permit for but was unable to produce the permit at the time.

The Poteau Daily News is waiting on an official statement from White and his lawyer, which will be added to this online report when received.
