Poteau golfer wins Coweta Invitational; Lady Pirates second to Bishop Kelley

COWETA — Poteau Lady Pirate golfer Hannah Ward won the individual medalist title with a 78 in the season-opening Coweta Invitational Monday afternoon.As a team, the Lady Pirates were runners-up with a 408, finishing behind champion Tulsa Bishop Kelley (400). The tournament had 72 golfers and 15 teams, which were mostly from Classes 5A and 6A.Cathleen Manlove was eighth-place medalist with an even 100, followed by Paitton Callery with a 114, Skylynn Terry with a 116 and Alyssa Vineyard had a 133.The Lady Pirates will next hit the links at the Tahlequah Invitational next Wednesday.Poteau JV boys runners-up, Heavener Wolves third at Stigler InvitationalSTIGLER — The Poteau Pirates junior varsity was second and the Heavener Wolves third at Monday's Stigler Invitational.The Pirates were runners-up with a 413 thanks to junior John Buckles and freshmen Lane Robertson, Joel Holstead, Kendall Peterson and Connor Bandy.The Wolves had a 416. Leading the way was Colt Dunigan with a 102, followed by Jackson Long and Stormy Winters with 106s, Corby Kirkland with a 116 and Austin Davis with a 124.The host Panthers won the tournament with a 355.The Pirates will open their varsity season Tuesday at the Tahlequah Invitational, while the Wolves will be idle until the Broken Bow Invitational March 27.The Poteau Junior High Boys Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Choctaw Country Club.
