Poteau Pirates look to bounce back from first football loss of season, travel to Stilwell tonight

The Poteau Pirates football team went toe to toe with Class 4A's sixth-ranked Sallisaw Black Diamonds last week in the District 4A-4 opener at Costner Stadium, but eventually fell 31-21.“We played well, and we played hard,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. “We didn't give up. It just came down to a few plays where we didn't make them and they did. That's just football, but we played very hard. There were a lot of good things (about the Sallisaw game).”While winning the game was a big team goal for the Pirates (3-1, 0-1 in district play), the loss did not make or break their season. There are still chances not only to make the playoffs, but get a home playoff game and even a district championship — with the right help.“We're still in there,” Werner said. “We just need to keep fighting, but the main thing is we have to get better. We have to figure out how to make the big plays. It was a critical juncture in the game, and that's what we didn't do. That's what we're trying to figure out — how to make those plays.”Up next for the Pirates will be a road game at 7:30 p.m. tonight against the Stilwell Indians (0-4, 0-1). The Indians lost their district opener 56-0 to Class 4A's top-ranked Tulsa Cascia Hall last week, and they have been outscored 147-14 in their four losses.— — —District 4A-4 StandingsTeam District Overall +/-Broken Bow 1-0 3-1 +15Fort Gibson 1-0 4-0 +15Tulsa Cascia Hall 1-0 4-0 +15Sallisaw 1-0 3-1 +10Poteau 0-1 3-1 -10Muldrow 0-1 1-3 -15Stilwell 0-1 0-4 -15Tulsa Rogers 0-1 1-2 -15— — —To Get There — Take U.S. 59 north to Stilwell.
