Poteau senior softball trio not surprised by this fall's success

With the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team reloading after losing six of its starters to graduation from last fall's team, some may have wondered if the success would still happen. It has.The Lady Pirates have amassed a 26-8 record, five straight LeFlore County fast-pitch titles and 11 straight district titles.“I think our chemistry has really clicked,” senior first baseman Chelsey Campbell said. “The freshmen have really helped us. Everybody has stepped up like they needed to.”This week, the Lady Pirates will try to end those years of frustration by winning the Class 4A Regional Tournament, which will begin Thursday at Bethel High School in Shawnee. The regional final is slated for 2 p.m. Friday. By approximately 3 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Lady Pirates could be regional champions and a state fast-pitch qualifier for the first time since 2005.Depending on who is the home team in the regional final, it could end with a strikeout from senior pitcher RaeLynn Caldwell, caught by senior Sidnee Ward.“It would be awesome,” Caldwell said. “I'll probably freak out, and attack Sidnee [in celebrating, after throwing the final pitch of that game]. I'll probably tackle her.”“I'm ready for it,” Ward said. I've got the gear on and everything.”• • •Class 4ARegional TournamentAt Bethel High SchoolThursdaySeminole vs. Bethel, noon; Poteau vs. Harrah, 2 p.m.; Seminole-Bethel loser vs. Poteau-Harrah loser, 4 p.m.; Seminole-Bethel winner vs. Poteau-Harrah winner, 6 p.m.Friday4 p.m. Thursday winner vs. 6 p.m. Thursday loser, noon; noon winner vs. 6 p.m. Thursday winner, 2 p.m.; if-game, 4 p.m.
