Poteau wrestlers in Class 4A District Duals today at Wagoner; then, Pirates in Sallisaw Tournament over weekend

The postseason has arrived for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team. The Pirates will be in the Class 4A District Duals beginning at 5 p.m. today in Wagoner.“We're real anxious,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “This is what we've been working toward all season. We've kind of had our ups and downs, but we're kind of coming into this on an upswing (two dual wins last Thursday against Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside and Talihina). We're looking for good things.”Along with the host Bulldogs, the Pirates (13-5 in duals this season) will be joined by the Sallisaw Black Diamonds and the Fort Gibson Tigers.“We face some tough competition with Sallisaw and Wagoner,” Barbee said. “Those are probably the two teams to beat. Fort Gibson is really tough, too. They just entered the top 15 in dual rankings. We saw them earlier this year at the Weatherford Tournament (last month). They always have a lot of good, solid kids. But I think Sallisaw is the favorite. They're the highest ranked team in the duals. It's going to be an uphill battle. The kids are prepared and ready to go do this. We're really looking forward to it.”After today's district duals, the Pirates will be in the Sallisaw Tournament, beginning at noon Friday and resuming at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday.
