Senior QB knows offense, defense needs to get better

Another game, another win for the Poteau Pirates — another dramatic win at that. Friday night, the Pirates rallied for the second straight week for a victory, this time 43-40 over the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers. The win was good in the since it gives the team confidence to come from behind.“It lets the team know we can win at anytime,” said Poteau senior quarterback Jace Pitchford, whose team will hit the road to meet Tulsa Webster at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. “We can fight. We fought hard [Friday night to win], and that's always a good sign — to never give up. Van Buren and Durant were great football teams. We played hard. We played great, and we came out with wins — and we were VERY happy.”On the other hand, Pitchford knows both the offensive and defensive units need to shore things up.“Both games we started off slower than we wanted,” he said. “We need to get more consistent on defense, and on offense we need to start earlier. We need to score faster. Once we get going, we get going. We just need to start faster.”
