Senior soccer trio winding down high school careers

This afternoon's homecoming soccer game at 4:30 p.m. at Costner Stadium against Hilldale will be the last time the senior Lady Pirates will hit the field at home.Today's game also just happens to be the third game in five days at home to end the regular season for the Lady Pirates, who beat Porter Consolidated on Friday then had Senior Night Monday against Westville.Senior defender/midfielder Jeanelle Cabellero wishes that the home contests were not confined to such a short time span.“I wish that the games were more spaced out, and not so close together,” she said. “That's going to be stressful because we want to do well in these home games.”Like any senior, playing one's last home game is an emotional time.“It's sad because after these games, there won't be any more high school soccer,” senior midfielder Taylor Carver said. One senior, defender Marleigh Self, won't get to play in today's game. In fact, it's been a couple of weeks since she has played. However, it doesn't stop her from trying to help as much as she can.“I haven't been out there because of work,” she said. “My last games were in the Greenwood Tournament, but I've been out there giving them support.”If all goes to plan, Self will be serving our country through our military.“I'm going to finish at Carl Albert, then go into the Air Force,” the senior said. For Self, coming back out for soccer her senior season has gotten her ready for her Air Force career.“I had been playing soccer since age 4, but I didn't play last year,” Self said. “This year, I came back out because I wanted to get back into shape for one thing. While this will be the last high school soccer game for Cabellero, it won't be her last competitive game — at least if her plans come to fruition.“I'm hoping to go to UCO (University of Central Oklahoma),” she said. “I'm hoping to get a scholarship.”While the season has not gone the way everyone had hoped, ending the season with a winning streak would be special.“We've put in a lot of hard work, and it would be special if we can win these last games,” Carver said.
