Spiro baseball seniors glad for another trip to state; Bulldogs meet Salina this afternoon in Class 3A state quarterfinals

SPIRO — It’s quite an accomplishment when a high school athlete makes the state tournament, even better when it happens more than once. That’s the case for Spiro senior pitcher Kelby Fowler.“It was great,” said Fowler about Saturday afternoon’s 5-4 win over Stigler to win the Class 3A Regional Tournament and make state. “Making it the first time [last year] was kind of overwhelming. This year, it’s kind of the same thing. It’s a good feeling to get to go back to back to state. I’m beyond excited. I’m loving it.”Last year at this time, it appeared as if Fowler would be the lone senior. Not so.Senior football player Colton Whittaker decided to end his Spiro High School career on the baseball diamond.“This is actually my first year to play,” Whittaker said. “I’ve always liked football better than baseball. I just came out here because it was my senior year. I just thought I’d come out here and play, and be part of the team. It’s been fun. I’ve had a lot of fun.”• • •To Get There — To get to Deer Creek-Edmond High School, take Oklahoma State Highway 9 west to U.S. 59. Take U.S. 59 north to Sallisaw.
