Jerry Johnston, who guided the Poteau High School football team from 1984-2004 and served as athletic director, passed away Sunday at age 78.

As the Pirates’ longest-tenured and winningest coach, Johnston led the team to five state semifinals appearances (1989, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2000), two district titles (1996 and 1999), 17 playoffs wins, 15 playoff trips and a 134-105 record.
