The Poteau school bond election failed in Tuesday's election.

With nine of nine polling places in, the unofficial results are 802 no, 703 yes, at a total of 1,505 voting. The bond needed 60 percent to pass.

The $22.93 million bond issue would have been designated for construction of a two-story seventh- and eighth-grade academic center, renovations to the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center for performing arts, building an event center and adding new high school classrooms.

Schools Superintendent Don Sjoberg said the two-story seventh- and eighth-grade center would relieve overcrowding at the Primary and Upper Elementary schools. The Kidd Center would have been renovated as a performing arts center, and an event center would have brought "county and regional schools together for tournaments and other competitions," the district said.

Pocola's school bond ended at 407 yes, 274 no. It needed 60 percent to pass, while only received 59.77 percent.
